That headline is a direct quote from an article on June 9, 2019 from the insightful website Beacon of Speech.
Last night, Zack Steffen and the U.S. Men's National Team lost to CANADA for the first time in over 30 years. Before last night, the Canadians hadn't scored a goal against the USMNT in over a decade.
After we lambasted Steffen in that June story, I did a little more research on goalie Zack Steffen. Apparently the USMNT needed to play him so he could get a work permit to play in the Premier League, specifically for Manchester City.
I'm not sure how the UK work permit works, but Manchester City HAD to see something in Steffen that I didn't see to pique their interest. So despite my tantrum, I gave Steffen the benefit of the doubt. Again, we are talking about Manchester City, arguably the best soccer team in the world.
One month to the day, July 9, 2019, that I asked the USMNT team to cut Steffen, he did indeed sign with Manchester City. Then, LATER THAT SAME DAY, Manchester City loaned him to Fortuna Düsseldorf in the German first division. Fortuna is currently teetering on relegation at the bottom of the Bundesliga with a 1-5-1 record. The leader in the Bundesliga in saves this year? Zack Steffen. He has played in all 7 of Fortuna's games, but has yet to post a clean sheet. So Steffen went from an average goalie in MLS in 2018 to an average goalie (benefit of the doubt, since I don't watch to much Bundesliga) in Germany....
