I was scrolling through music news today and came across this gem:

<<RECORD SCRATCH>>

Uh, no.

Now I like Dee Snider, he's quite a character. But, no, his band did not invent Speed Metal.

And I like Twisted Sister, in my parents' basement are both Stay Hungry and Come Out and Play. But Twisted Sister is one of the bands that I "outgrew."

An Underrated Classic

Twisted Sister itself, though, was a bit of a novelty, they seemingly never reached the gravitas, or longevity, of their peers.

When I think of who invented Speed Metal, these are the candidates I think of:

  1. Breaking the Law by Judas Priest (1980)

My personal opinion is that the correct answer is Judas Priest.

  1. Ace of Spades by Motorhead (1980)

According to Google's AI Program, the answer is Motorhead.

  1. Whiplash by Metallica (1983)

The internet seems to agree that Metallica invented Thrash Metal, not Speed Metal.

  1. Metal Thrashing Mad by Anthrax (1984)

Anthrax is not credited with inventing Speed Metal, but bringing it to the masses. .

You're calling me Grandpa?

Okay, these are my three favorite Speed Metal Songs since the year 2000:

  • The Goatrider's Horde by 3 Inches of Blood (2007)

  • Relentless by Strapping Young Lad (2003)

  • Operation Ground and Pound by DragonForce (2006)

Sadly, Twisted Sister has been relegated to 2-Hit Wonder Status as their members approach 70.

(You say 3-Hit Wonders, I forgot Leader of the Pack? Leader of the Pack was TERRIBLE!)
