Is Disney Too Woke or Do They Just Suck?

I saw this article at The Blaze: Disney's Woke Turn....

I didn't even finish reading the headline. I am going to give my short opinion about Disney in general.

Walt Disney was a genius and a visionary.

From Snow White in 1937 to about the mid 1950's, that was the Golden age of Disney. Every movie was iconic and Disney was etched in the public consciousness as a Family-Friendly Entertainment Behemoth, specifically in animation.

When Walt Disney died in 1966, he had already become detached from the artistic side of Disney and was engulfed in the theme park side of the Disney Brand.

If you look at Disney movies in the 60's. some were classics, but many were forgettable. When you get to the 70's, the studio churned out bad movie after bad movie after bad movie.

(Not the Apple Dumpling Gang 2, 10 year old Fred loved that film.)

Starting with the Black Hole in 1979, Disney spent the next decade making alternatively good, then bad, movies. Their luck was scattershot.

In 1989, the Great Disney Renaissance began with the Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast.

At the turn of the millennium, it was like Disney forgot what quality was. Tripe and drek was produced at a conveyor belt pace. You argue that the 2000's were chock full of great Disney movies like Toy Story, Up, and WALL-E? Those were all Pixar Films produced under the Disney Umbrella. Disney itself was producing things like the Hannah Montana Movie and focusing on the Disney Channel.

During Covid, Disney rolled out their streaming option Disney+. Due to the increased time at home, Disney+ was comfort programming for the mind. But after about 6 months, I noticed the kids preferred Hulu, and the programs I watched were shiny entities that Disney BOUGHT, specifically Marvel, Star Wars, and the National Geographic Channel.

Scrolling through the Disney options on Disney+ is like going to the beach and sifting through driftwood and dead fish to find a pretty shell.

Why so short and dismissive? If I made a list of Top 100 Films of all time list (which I might do one day), there would probably be no Disney movies on it. The Blaze is commenting on a corporate entity that tries to market to 10 year olds and their easily fooled parents. If you scroll through their entire history, Disney misses the mark MOST of the time.

I would argue that the problem with Disney isn't being woke (even though the lean that way today) they're just going through another decade or so cycle where they don't create magic.

The difference between the 70's and today is that because the Disney Banner is now at the top of the food chain, they can use their deep pockets to buy quality content, instead of create it.

I would be remiss if I didn't say RIP to Tom Sizemore who died last night. You want a quality performance? Sizemore was historical in his turn as Detective Scagnetti in Natural Born Killers, which would surely be on my Top 100 List.

You want to counter that Sizemore was a drug addled has-been and shouldn't be celebrated? You know how many Disney Kids turned to drugs after Disney Inc. used them up and tossed them out by age 20?

I was just about to hit the publish button when I took a quick sojourn to CNN.

Big Mistake:

Really?

According to CNN: "The song “Zip-a-dee-doo-dah” originated in the 1946 film “Song of the South” that has long been criticized for stereotypes of “spiritual” Black men and its seemingly nostalgic view of the antebellum South."

The sooner you realize that CNN and The Blaze are the same animal, just one plays on the Blue Team and one on the Red, the sooner.....

You know what? We're done here.

Article over.
