"You are what your record says you are." - Bill Parcells
The NFL really is the easiest sport in America to cover. Former Commissioner Pete Rozelle set the league up for parity. The best teams, in theory, play the hardest schedules the next year. The worst teams get the best players coming out of college. When the team is good, you're good. And when the team is bad....
Since 2020, when Andrew Berry became the youngest General Manager in NFL History, this is his record (below):
2020: 11-5
2021: 8-9
2022: 7-10
2023: 11-6
2024: 3-14
Easy Math: 40-44. During Berry's tenure, the Browns have won one playoff game. The quarterback in that game? Baker Mayfield, whom Berry traded away almost immediately.
Andrew Berry then signed Deshaun Watson to the "WORST CONTRACT IN NFL HISTORY."
That's not me saying that:
So when the dreadful 3-14 season came to an end, and Watson was sidelined with a long-term injury, everyone knew that the Browns HAD to address the quarterback situation.
In March of 2025, the Browns traded away their backup to the Philadelphia Eagles for Kenny Pickett.
In April of 2025, the Browns signed free agent Joe Flacco.
Going into the draft, it was feasible that the Browns were going to draft a quarterback. There are persistent rumors that the Browns are looking for either a buyout or a medical settlement with Deshaun Watson.
Then the Browns drafted the guy they "wanted" in the 3rd round, Oregon's Dillon Gabriel.
Here's the quote from our article---FROM JUST LAST WEEK:
"Cleveland Browns' team mouthpiece, Mary Kay Cabot, who correctly predicted the trade-down in the first round, was right again. On Friday, she had predicted a quarterback would be chosen later on in the day. She gleefully let the public know, after the fact, that the Browns had secretly wined and dined Dillon. He was their guy all along. "Then, the day before they headed to Colorado for the NFL showcase of Sanders and Hunter, they flew Air Haslam out to Eugene, Oregon, for a private workout and dinner with Gabriel, owner Jimmy Haslam included. The private sessions never leaked out."
So when it came to the quarterback position, the draft should have ended with Dillon. But you all know what happened, the Browns picked up the Sanders kid in the 5th round. Rumors burned through the league that the OWNER made the pick.
From Mary Kay today:
BEREA, Ohio — "The Browns had no plans to draft Shedeur Sanders on Day 3 of the NFL draft, but once he tumbled into the fifth round, it became a no-brainer for Browns GM Andrew Berry.
The decision was 110% Berry’s and not a directive from Jimmy Haslam, despite the persistent narrative in NFL circles." --- PAYWALL
To me, Andrew Berry should be on the hot seat. To Mary Kay, Andrew Berry is doing a fine job.
If on January 1st of 2025, Berry's Plan was to have 5 quarterbacks for the season on opening day, you fire Berry today. He doesn't get it.
If on January 1st of 2025, Berry's Plan was to draft 2 quarterbacks, he shouldn't have signed Flacco and Pickett.
If on January 1st of 2025, Berry's Plan was to start Watson when healthy, you don't add 4 potential starters for fall. Picking a fifth QB in Sanders should NOT HAVE BEEN A "NO-BRAINER!"
I shouldn't be saying this. Mary Kay should be saying this.
I am so mad right now, cleveland.com is just loaded with cheerleaders who have been giving the team the benefit of the doubt since 1999, grateful that we even have NFL Football.
Guess what? If the state doesn't step up with some money soon, Jimmy Haslam's tone is going to start to change about whether we have a team.
Mary Kay won't say anything about that until she sees the moving trucks.
