Over at Revolver today, they had a Fan Poll of the most popular Smashing Pumpkins songs:

Wow, that's not even CLOSE to right. Who am I to argue with a fan poll?
Here is the Top 5, corrected:
5. Bury Me
4. I Am One
3. Bullet With Butterfly Wings

1. Snail
But more importantly: Why does any of this matter?
There's a lot of revisionist history going on out there. Many of Billy Corgan's peers have died while Corgan Himself seems like he's on a never-ending press tour:
Yet, from my angle, the actual music of the Smashing Pumpkins feels dated and mostly irrelevant after 1998's Adore.
I don't feel that way about Jane's Addiction for example. Their 1990 release Ritual de lo Habitual still has the depth and energy as when it was released.
The Smashing Pumpkins had some nice songs in the 90's, they absolutely did, but they didn't have a Dark Side of the Moon, if you will.
Sometimes your musical legacy is shaped by whether you live or not, while continuing to try to sell those old records.
