The Army is Screwed

Back in Vietnam, the counter-culture raged against the President as well as American Soldiers, as young people demanded that Bastard Nixon get out of Southeast Asia. Young people tried desperately not to serve and some even fled to Canada. Noted politicians Donald Trump and Joe Biden BOTH avoided the war.
In 1973, the Draft was abolished and the United States went to an all-volunteer army.
That was over 50 years ago.
Rush Limbaugh famously stated, "the armed forces exists for 2 reasons:"
Kill People
Break Stuff
To make a long story short, Limbaugh was fundamentally correct. The Army should not be an agent of social change.
What's my point? Today, over at Rolling Stone, this was their lead story: Transgender Troops Deserve the Right to Serve
I mean, how did we get here? Rolling Stone rolled out with the story of a decorated Combat Aviator before disappearing behind a pay wall. But the premise, to me, is why does far-left Rolling Stone fight for its readers to JOIN the evil army?
Since Vietnam, we have put our troops in harms way in little wars like Somalia and Grenada.
You're yelling 'what about Desert Storm?' 147 troops died in combat in that "war."
If Donald Trump comes out, tomorrow, and says "China must be stopped, we are reinstituting the draft and sending a million troops to the South China Sea." You know who ain't writing "send the transgender soldiers to Taiwan." Rolling Stone. Rolling Stone would never support joining an army run by Trump in a real war.
Right now, the army is about fitness and well-paying jobs. About 6,000 American Troops have died in combat in the last 50 years. That averages out to about 120 troops a year. In 2023, 137 police offices died in the line of duty. I could argue that being a cop in a major metropolitan city is more dangerous than being in the Army. The Afghanistan War took the lives of about 2,400 Americans in combat. But that was over a 20 year span, meaning, again, about 120 soldiers lost a year.
In the year 2023, the United States spent $820 Billion on national defense. What are they spending all that money on? If the United States has a million active duty troops, and 120 of them died, that's about a .012% death rate. Yes, I know that doesn't count suicides or training deaths. but if you don't have a real chance to "die" in the armed services, then it's all about good jobs at good wages.
Listen, I'm not saying war is good. I'm not saying we should start a war. I am saying that Rolling Stone needs some moral clarity.
In World War II, Nazi Hitler was defeated and about 8 million Germans died. About half of all adult men in Germany either were killed or severely injured.
But in 2025, "Nazi" Trump is mean because he won't let Transgenders enlist in an Army with a .012% death rate? Just this week, Donald Trump met with the new leader of Syria 6 years after he pulled American Troops out of that country.
As a Libertarian-leaning website, we have to apologize for our devil-may-care attitude. Our official position is war is bad and cut the military budget.
But if the government didn't incentivize joining the military with free college, I am telling you, they wouldn't hit their enlistment quotas. Rolling Stone's article might as well have been titled "Donald Trump is Banning Transgenders access to College."
