The Equal Earth Project's Right Wing Slant
As you well know, the shape of the Earth is an Oblate Spheroid, not unlike a kid sitting on a beach ball.
How well does an oblate spheroid convert to two dimensions? It doesn't.
For the last 500 years or so, the The Mercator Map has been the classroom standard, despite making countries in the far Northern Hemisphere grossly oversized. It also gives the appearance that Antarctica is the biggest nation in the world, running across the entire bottom of the page.
But for the last 25 years or so, The Mercator Map has come under fire as being racist. I am not kidding. From Amnesty International: "The UN voted in favour of a resolution to formally phase out the commonly used 16th century Mercator world map. The resolution rightfully acknowledges that the map’s distortions contribute to a ‘symbolic minimisation’ of Africa, perpetuating historical biases. The resolution encourages governments, schools, tech companies and international organizations to use the Equal Earth projection going forward, which depicts Africa and other continents accurately. In the words of Togo’s foreign minister Robert Dussey who spearheaded the resolution, "a fair world begins with a fair map."
I don't care which map you use, the example above illustrates why you should be using a GLOBE.
But you know who's secretly pushing the Equal Earth Map? The Right. The undertone is that countries such as Canada, Great Britain, and Sweden can't accept more refugees because they are too small. According to Amnesty International's own logic, it is Africa that should be accepting refugees, it is now accurately sized and plenty big to accept newcomers.
Look how little Great Britain is. If you go just by size, IRAN and SAUDI ARABIA should be accepting Muslim refugees. For the last century, we've been tricked into thinking that there's a multicultural Manifest Destiny in places like the expansive Canadian West!
You say my tongue is planted firmly in my cheek? I'm just saying you can take a map and make it say whatever you want it to say. A map is a map.
