At my day job, I noticed our new mechanic had a Mushroomhead tattoo.

A Cool Tattoo
A Cool Tattoo

I asked him if he was following the Mushroomhead Drama, he said "nah, I used to like them when I was younger, not so much anymore."

Dude is like 25.

So I will tell you, the reader, what I passed on telling him:

Mushroomhead I:

Founded in 1993 as an 8-piece band, Mushroomhead has ballooned to 10 members. Not the same members, mind you, there are now 2 dozen Mushroomhead alumni, but 9 newer musicians. Founding member Steve "Skinny" Felton now leads a team of family members and hired guns in the band's 23rd year of existence.

Just yesterday, Mushroomhead announced a new Fall Tour with Fear Factory.

Felton owns the band's name and branding, but with the exception of Ginger Baker, if the drummer in your band is the leader, you are in big trouble.

Mushroomhead II:

In December of 2025, 6 former members of Mushroomhead formed The Ex-Faces. The newly formed band was going to focus on the band's Classic Era. I assume that means 2001-2003, when the band released XX and XIII.

Since the promotional poster above was released, it was announced that a SEVENTH former Mushroomhead member would be joining the Ex-Faces and they would now be doing 4 shows. I fully expect that the Ex-Faces will try to have a full-fledged tour (minus Felton) in 2027.

Just a reminder, we are talking about Mushroomhead, a band with one Top 40 single on their resume, 2006's Simple Survival. There is a legitimate chance that if you don't like Metal, or don't live in the Midwest, you've never heard of them.

Mushroomhead III:

Former co-lead singer of Mushroomhead, Jeffrey Nothing, took to social media about a month ago and said he was not joining the Ex-Faces, but he wished them well.

Then, about a week ago, Jeffrey Nothing announced he was settling his lawsuit with Mushroomhead Leader Skinny Felton. He was not rejoining Mushroomhead, but he wished them well.

Jeffrey Nothing seems like a nice guy, and didn't rule out anything for the future, but right now he wants to focus on his solo project.

If you look at the bottom of the Milwaukee Metal Fest lineup, there's Jeffrey Nothing. Will he play only solo material? Or maybe a Mushroomhead song or two?

Time will tell.

Because I live in Cleveland, I was aware of Mushroomhead from the Superbuick days, but fell in love with them when a friend gave me their 3-song sampler for 2001's XX. I have rooted for the local band ever since.

I just don't know which musicians to root for anymore.
