Just hours before the Friday Performance

Alice Donut is readying for a 2-night stint in Brooklyn as we speak. This article is part 1 of 2. Today we are focusing on the past. But before we do that, tickets are still available for tonight and Saturday.

The original 2-night performance was supposed to be at a venue that has since closed. Then Ticketmaster (wrongly) said the entire show was cancelled. If you're in the New York Area, there is still time to get there.

Michael Jung just posted Friday's itinerary:

6:00 Doors Open

7:00 Nasalrod

8:00 Victim's Family

8:45 ALICE DONUT

For the uninitiated, Alice Donut is one of the greatest punk bands in the history of music. Yes, I know they aren't the Sex Pistols, the Ramones, or the Dead Kennedys, but it wasn't their fault that they were born too late.

  1. Untidy Suicides of Your Degenerate Children by Alice Donut (1992)

Wading out of the sewer that was CBGB's, Alice Donut was the next generation of New York punk band that was focused on... wait for it, making great punk music. Honing their craft instead of OD’ing in their 20's, or hanging out with Andy Warhol, their lyrics were as provocatively deviant as anything by Lou Reed, with music as raw as anything that came out of the 70’s. Why have you never heard of Alice Donut? Because Rolling Stone Magazine brainwashed you into thinking Nevermind was the best punk album of the 90’s. Alice Donut is a true American original with few modern peers.

But every great band had to start somewhere. YouTube found some origin material from when many members were in the SeaBeasts. You want info on the SeaBeasts? Pre-Alice Donut group formed at Columbia University in New York.

You'll recognize some of the songs that later made their way onto other albums.

Again some songs are familiar, some are not. Alice Donut's demo discography also found its way onto some other future releases.

Their first 5 albums are absolute canon:

  • Donut Comes Alive (1988)

  • Bucketfulls of Sickness and Horror in an Otherwise Meaningless Life (1989)

  • Mule (1990)

  • Revenge Fantasies of the Impotent (1990)

  • The Untidy Suicides of your Degenerate Children (1992)

But like many prolific bands, churning out albums yearly, they became road warriors and burned out. After taking their time (relatively speaking) to release Pure Acid Park (1995), they played their 1,000th show and then broke up.

If you scour the internet, the band's interview with Mark Prindle is still there from when they re-united. The band would release 3 more albums:

  • Three Sisters (2004)

  • Fuzz (2006)

  • Ten Glorious Animals (2009)

When I was young, I wore out those first 5 albums. When I was older, I really appreciated Three Sisters and Fuzz. I even posted 2 of their songs on the internet that I couldn't find (at the time).

Am I missing anything?

Yeah, a ton.

If you are curious: If I love Alice Donut so much, why didn't I make the trip?

Sadly, I had a cochlear implant 2 weeks ago. It doesn't get turned "on" until next week. Just bad timing.

When I worked with Donna Ehlert back in the early 90's, we were supposed to see Alice Donut because I didn't want to go alone. That show was cancelled due to Tomas' voice issues. I can't remember which tour that was, but I'm sure he remembers.
