Matt Zane's Trivial Pursuit

Back in 2025, we proclaimed that Static-X was in the Big Four....of Nu Metal.

That's like proclaiming what your favorite type of cake is. Nu Metal was nothing but sugary fun.

I rarely think of Static-X nowadays, Wayne Static has been dead for over a decade and the other 3 original members are touring with the lead singer of Dope wearing a death mask.

Editor's Note: Yes, it took us a bit to warm up to the concept, but the reviews for the live show were surprisingly positive.

Why am I writing about Static-X today? For some reason, some guy named Matt Zane apparently used a shit-ton of hashtags and overloaded my Facebook algorithm. What's up Zane's rear? He was a close personal friend of Wayne Static and apparently directed some of his solo videos. His revelation? Wayne Static never wanted Static-X to get back together and he's producing the Unauthorized Static-X Documentary, coming out in 2027, to tell you, the Static-X fan, the truth.

Uh, I already know the truth. Wayne Static drove everyone from the band, then went solo. That is not a secret. At the end, Static was obviously the visionary of the band, but he also thought of himself as bigger than the band. Tony Campos, Ken Jay, and Koichi Fukuda got sick of Wayne Static, either due to the drugs or the attitude, and left the band one by one. At the beginning, the 4 musicians thought of themselves as a 4-man team.

Tale as old as time, the lead singer vs the rhythm section-

Matt Zane says Wayne Static would be appalled that his former bandmates were carrying on Static-X without him?

Yeah, no shit. That's not a secret either.

Maybe Static shouldn't have taken all those drugs and married the Yoko Ono of porn stars.

The Sex Pistols were one of the most important punk bands in history. Number of proper studio albums? One.

For decades, the Sex Pistols re-united here and there for random cash grabs, but the band, for all intensive purposes, did nothing past 1980. (Over 45 years ago, for those bad at math.)

Former lead singer Johnny Rotten, who spent most of that time with his own vanity project, PiL, has stayed busy over the years. The rest of the Sex Pistols? I have no idea what the hell they've been up to for the last few decades.

What's my point? In 2024, to the chagrin of Johnny Rotten, former Pistols Steve Jones, Paul Cook and Glen Matlock decided to re-form the Sex Pistols with the former lead singer of the Gallows, Frank Carter.

Even though Rotten is still very much alive, the rest of the Sex Pistols apparently couldn't wait for Rotten's wife to die for the band to re-unite, yet again.

In response, Rotten declared, loudly and furiously, in his semi-Cockney accent, "I am the Sex Pistols." Then added a bunch of swear words.

The Sex Pistols' situation really isn't that dissimilar to Static-X's predicament.

Why does Matt Zane care so much about Static's Legacy? Technically, isn't keeping Static-X's music alive keeping Static's Legacy alive?

According to Matt Zane, the former members of Static-X, Edsel Dope, and the Static Estate are all a bunch of no talent hacks trying to cash in on Wayne Static's genius.

Kind of like Matt Zane himself.

Robert Plant wants the final word: "I am not your jukebox."

Many musicians beg to differ.
