Over at the Daily Mail, they declared New Ulm, Minnesota the "Least Diverse City in the US."
New Ulm?
I've actually been to New Ulm, it's remarkably unremarkable.
I used to live in Mankato and went to South Dakota once. New Ulm was the last (small) city before you saw a bunch of nothing. New Ulm was bland as (White) bread.
But I find it hard to believe it is the "Least Diverse City in America."
According to the Daily Mail, New Ulm is, shockingly, "93% White" and mostly German.
And? It's rural Minnesota, what do you expect?
Let's step on over to my neck of the woods, Cleveland, Ohio.
Neighboring suburb Bay Village is also 93% White. I assume there's lot of suburbs in the United States with high rates of Whiteness, to me, that's not all that unusual.
Here's a map of Cuyahoga County, Ohio, the county that houses Cleveland:

In yellow are 2 communities that are 93% White: Bay Village and Chagrin Falls.
In gray are 2 communities that are 93% Black: East Cleveland and Warrensville Heights.
Are there outcries that East Cleveland isn't diverse enough? There are not.
That large green parcel of land in the middle? That's Cleveland proper. In 1950, Cleveland had a population of 900,000 and was the 7th largest city in America.
Due to race riots on the East Side, and mob wars near downtown, people of ALL RACES couldn't get out of Cleveland fast enough. Many Blacks gravitated to the East Side, many Whites gravitated to the West Side.
According to the National Institute of Medicine: "Diversity is essential because it fosters innovation, improves problem-solving, and drives personal growth by bringing together varied perspectives. By incorporating different lived experiences, diverse groups avoid groupthink, challenge assumptions, and generate better outcomes across society, business, and nature."
Hmm, it is?
Since the end of World War II, Cleveland has lost over half a million residents, mostly to the suburbs, exurbs, and even some to the sun belt.
Even former Mayor Michael White couldn't get out of town fast enough when his term ended in 2002.
So with a current population of around 365,000, Cleveland itself is actually very diverse. About 50% Black, 50% White and Hispanic.
Cleveland is now 53rd in the nation in population. If you count every little city around Cleveland, the actual metroplex is the 35th largest in the nation.
But if diversity is the most important asset to a community, why aren't people flooding INTO Cleveland?
Ha, ha....
You know what?
End of Article.
